History Of The Brewery

History of the Brewery

Following a $10m+ investment programme, The Cayman Islands Brewery was launched in 2007. The company constructed a state of the art brewery incorporating a fully automated brew house, together with canning and bottling lines. The objective from the start has been to deliver world-class products which are particular to the Cayman Islands. Making the Cayman Islands far more than just the beautiful beaches, but beautiful beaches with AWESOME beer.

Set on a 3-acre site, the facility is approximately 18,000 square feet across all 3 buildings. The brewery equipment arrived into the Cayman Islands in 28 containers from both Europe and Canada and many consultants from the manufacturers came to work for various lengths of time to install and commission the new brewery and train local staff in the operation of the plant. CIB has built one of the most modern breweries in the region and at its core was the Board’s commitment to building a plant that recognised the sensitivity of the Caymanian environment. CIB invested in a fully automated bottling plant from the Czech Republic, designed to accommodate returnable bottles and to achieve high levels of productivity and efficiency. (See our sustainability section for more info on our efforts on reducing our carbon footprint).  The emphasis is on environmentally friendly production and distribution, including reusable bottles.

Since The Beginning

Since the beginning, the Brewery’s main objective was to produce a Caymanian beer, one to be recognised as a product of the highest international standards. Our range of beers have won many awards in the international arena and are firmly established as the beers of choice in Cayman, something of which we are extremely proud. Some of these awards include a 2011 Gold award for Ironshore Bock and Caybrew at the world Selection (Caybrew has won the award three times).

The company is fully owned by a Caymanian company. We employ a dedicated 28 strong team – see the team page for more info on our Caybrew Crew– who strive for excellence in all they do to make The Cayman Islands Brewery the special business it is today. We are very much a part of the local community and work closely with many organisations on events, promotions and fundraisers. This includes sponsoring and raising money for local charities. We are a popular destination for visitors to our islands and locals also enjoy stopping by and purchasing the fresh, locally made beer.

The company was previously owned by both Cayman and UK shareholders with management and staff as key stakeholders. The experienced Board of Directors who launched the brand in 2007 had a wealth of knowledge in the industry and other business sectors. The previous Chairman of the board, Stephen Webster, was joined by Des Campbell, Al Thompson, Katrina Rose, Craig Webster and James Mansfield. The combination of this team allowed the brewery to flourish into the company it is today.

The Beer Of The Cayman Islands

Caybrew as a Caymanian brand was marketed as the ‘National Beer of the Cayman Islands’, with the ambition of becoming the beer of choice amongst native Caymanians.  The Caybrew logo, packaging and labels incorporated the Silver Thatch Palm, the national plant of the Cayman Islands as its main graphic symbol along with three stars to symbolise each of the Islands which make up our country. Caybrew is proud to be local and is the freshest beer available in the Cayman Islands.

From the point of launch, Caybrew associated itself with Caymanian events; Sponsorships were secured to align the brand with Caymanian Boxer, Charles Whittaker, Batabano, Bracanal, Taste of Cayman and Pirates Week to name a few. (Find out what events we’re sponsoring at the moment on the blog/events section).  Caybrew is proud to be associated with Caymanian events and culture and is now a regular attendee on the social scene of the Islands. Stay up to date with previous events we have attended and what we’re sponsoring in the future via the blog page.

Since the 2007 launch of Caybrew, the Cayman Islands brewery has launched 10 beer brands and 3 seasonal beers. (click here to view all our beers). We aim to continue growing our beer brands and making great tasting beer for many years to come!
